The leaves are falling, the mornings and evenings are getting cooler, and we are feeling the urge to start our annual hibernation. Fall on the farm brings a much-needed change of pace. It’s not that the work is finished by any means but the pressure of having products available to customers is gone. We go from the constant planting, watering, harvesting, wrapping, and delivering of flowers to the clearing of beds, re-planting beds with cool-weather crops, and watching them grow through the winter.
Fall also brings a time of reflection and planning for the upcoming season. What worked? What could we do differently/better? My goal will always be to create a business that works around our family life so I always ask myself, was there anything that interfered with our quality time, spontaneous trips, etc.? If so, how can we change that aspect of the business to make it work for us instead of against us.
You see, that is the beauty of a small business. You get to design it to be what you want it to be. Sure, I could grow a LOT more flowers on a LOT more of our land… but that would require a LOT more people. Which brings a whole different aspect of a business- managing those people. I am only one person so for now, I’d like to keep our business small enough that we can manage it as a family. But if anyone wants to volunteer their time to come help pull weeds, you just give us a call!
As we enter into the busy holiday season, know that behind the scenes- even though the flower stand is closed and there are no more fresh flowers for sale- we are hard at work planning a beautiful third season of flowers for you! Thank you all so much for your support this year. We truly feel the love each time you purchase something from our small business!
